Discounted Elliptical Trainers – The Weslo 950 Elliptical Trainer Leads the Pack

Weslo is a division of ICON Fitness and specializes in discounted elliptical trainers. Weslo specializes in elliptical machines for those who have an extremely tight budget and need a very basic, no frills elliptical trainer. The company is conscious of the limited appeal of their machines, targeting beginners in the fitness world because the equipment simply isn’t designed for high level workouts.

What You Get

Discounted Elliptical Trainers - Weslo Momentum 950 The Weslo 950 elliptical trainer has the essentials for a workout if you’re trying to lose a few pounds or get a good cardio workout. Features include:

  • Upper body workout
  • 10 pre-set workouts
  • Manual resistance
  • Hand grip heart monitor
  • 16” stride
  • Book rack & drink holder
  • Warranty: 90 days

The most important thing to notice is that this elliptical machine has manual resistance. It’s not going to give you as intensive a workout as you could get on machines that have magnetic resistance. You can, however, adjust the manual resistance yourself to vary your workout.

The weight limit on the Weslo 950, as with most discounted elliptical trainers, isn’t all that high – just 250 lbs. For the seriously overweight or very large individuals, this machine won’t be sturdy enough.

The Word on the Street

Trainers will all tell you that discounted elliptical trainers (those under $500) simply don’t appeal to them. They find them wobbly and unstable, and find that the component durability leaves a lot to be desired. If pressed to suggest a budget elliptical trainer, however, many will say that a model such as the Weslo 950 is a good bet. They may be a bit noisy and they might wobble a bit at high speeds, but you will find that on any model at this price range. Weslo elliptical trainers have more structural integrity and a better feel than other brands in the price range, and they are safe and effective.

Users are satisfied with products like the Weslo 950 elliptical trainer as their “starter” machine. Nearly all say that it was fine for a year or two, but because of the noise or because they outgrew its capabilities, they soon graduated to a more expensive trainer with more features.

Our Thoughts

If you just can’t find more than $300 or so for an elliptical trainer, you can consider the Weslo 950 one of the best bets in the discounted elliptical trainers category. Keep in mind that at this price you’re getting just the basics and you aren’t going to get a whisper-quiet ride. If you want to try out elliptical training, however, and want to work out at home a few nights a week, this is a decent little machine.
