The Word on the Street

NordicTrack’s new 2010 AudioStrider 990 PRO has a heavier flywheel that should improve the performance and gives the user a quiet, smooth ride over the older 990 elliptical model.

The motorized incline ramp is another feature that is a popular draw to this machine, as well as the integrated sensors built into the handlebars to check your heart rate to ensure you are in the right training zone for your goals. In fact, while there are lots of showy things about the 2010 model, the problem with these machines is the lack of quality, cheap parts, and the company’s growing reputation for poor service.

The elliptical reviews on the NordicTrack AudioStrider 990 Pro elliptical have been so-so. Users recommend that the unit is best suited for individuals who weigh less than 250 pounds, and that you should read the sales literature carefully to know what you are getting.

For example, the power ramp extends the stride length to 20" when the incline is set to 30%. That means that the stride length is 18" at the lower settings.

Here’s another point: if you are jazzed by the iFit Live personal training feature, be aware that while this machine is iFit compatible, it is not included. You purchase the iFit Live module separately for $50, and pay a $120 yearly membership (it also requires a Wireless Network in your home).

Our Thoughts

Ask yourself, do you feel lucky? Will you be one of the customers who does not have problems with (occasional) use of their NordicTrack machine, or will you be using it every day and grow concerned as it develops odd squeaks, and then parts fall off, and then it breaks in about a year?

Hey, the company slaps short warranties on parts and labor on these machines for a reason! Forget the new and improved NordicTrack AudioStrider 990 Pro elliptical and go with something that has a solid proven track record, better value, and great customer reviews – check out the Schwinn 431 ($799) or the Schwinn 460 ($999).
