The Word on the Street

The NordicTrack FreeStrider 35S elliptical has a variable stride feature that extends up to 35" long. Short strides are good for lower leg development while mid and upper stride lengths work the quads, hamstrings, and glutes.

The extended range of motion helps with flexibility and muscle development as well as the cardiovascular workout in your heart and lungs. The highest 35" stride length will feel more like long-step hill climbing rather than stair climbing, but you will burn a ton of calories and be panting — guaranteed!

The custom-designed ERS™ (Electromagnetic Resistance System) applies consistent resistance to the flywheel for smooth performance. The dual-action upper body workout handlebars help target the muscles in the chest, shoulders, back and core.

As users note in many reviews, the motion of the glide path is nothing like an elliptical machine. Instead, the NordicTrack FreeStrider 35S is part of the next generation of Strider machines that is an all-in-one stepper and elliptical.

It is an intense cardio workout that can be more difficult than an elliptical trainer, and has an inverted arc motion that takes some getting used to. It is advisable that you do not buy this type of trainer without first trying it out at a local store.

Our Thoughts

The NordicTrack FreeStrider 35S is an exceptional cardio-blasting workout machine that will have you huffing, puffing, and sweating – even if you don’t normally reach this high level in your target heart rate zone.

A strider is a great concept, but we have a few reservations about the machine’s reliability, and NordicTrack’s customer service. Another issue to be aware of is the price.

The NordicTrack FreeStrider 35S elliptical has an MSRP of $1999 but we have seen it on sale during the holidays for $999, so shop carefully as the price varies wildly. This is cheaper version of the FreeStrider by FreeMotion, which is also an ICON Fitness company.
