The Word on the Street
The Smooth CE 3.6 elliptical trainer features pivoting foot pedals that mimic the natural movement of your ankle. This improved positioning both alleviates foot numbness after a long training session, and helps keep your lower body aligned for less strain in the hips, knees, and ankles. The unit also comes with a wireless heart rate control that will automatically adjust the machine’s resistance to keep you in the target HR zone for optimal results. Based on your sex, height, weight, and age, the onboard computer determines a preset max target heart rate, or you can choose a max target of your own.

Fitness experts will tell you that Smooth Fitness has one of the better-designed rear drive elliptical lines on the market. They use a roller less technology that cuts down on noise, and they have started to put the advanced features from their DMT machines into the standard ellipticals. The elliptical reviews by consumers and fitness pro have been positive for Smooth machines for many years. The Smooth CE 3.6 elliptical trainer scores high in areas of reliability, quality, construction, ergonomics, warranty, and price/value ratio. It’s also important to mention that Smooth equipment is easy to put together (including well-machined parts where the bolts line up with the holes!), unlike other units from brands such as Ironman.
Note: You get the lowest price and Free Shipping if you order directly from Smooth. Online “dealers” do not have the product themselves; they simply add $100+ bucks to the price and relay your order to Smooth. Since Smooth Fitness equipment is sold online only, direct from the manufacturer, you won’t find these machines in stores. That direct-to-consumer marketing philosophy has made them the number one online retailer of home fitness equipment in the U.S., and it is why they rank among the top 300 e-commerce sites on the internet.
Our Thoughts
Smooth Fitness makes buying one of their ellipticals easy since they don’t overwhelm you with dozens of choices at every $100 price point like Proform and other makers do. There are four standard Smooth elliptical models: the EVO REV 400, CE 3.6, CE 3.7, and the CE 7.4. If you need an adjustable stride of 18"-21", get the 3.7, which is the only adjustable stride model. If you want a fixed 21" stride with a higher user weight capacity, get the 7.4. The 3.6 is closer in specs to the EVO 400 except that you get iPod compatibility, a fan, and a backlit LCD display. The Smooth CE 3.6 elliptical trainer sells direct for $1,499 and ranks as a Best Buy.
