The Word on the Street

The FreeMotion Freestrider s7.8 elliptical meshes the advantages of incline training with an elliptical. The 44-inch Variable Stride allows you to choose your own stride length no matter what your height or natural range of motion. The custom-designed ERS or Electromagnetic Resistance System applies consistent resistance to the flywheel for a smooth workout.

The foot pedals have gel cushions for added stride comfort, which is important because you’ll be changing your stride length on the fly. That’s right – no buttons to press or need to dismount to change the setting, the variable stride length goes from short steps for calf development, to mid-length for the legs, and to long strides for developing the hamstrings and glutes. Along with anticipating the great workouts, potential buyers of the FreeMotion Freestrider s7.8 should be aware that this is not a typical elliptical nor does it feel like one; it is a “strider” and as such it feels more strenuous to the user than most ellipticals.

The FreeMotion Freestrider s7.8 is pre-loaded with 16 Stride Workouts, and a workout statistics memory so you can monitor your progress as you get in shape. The elliptical trainer also is compatible with iFit® Workout Cards that feature programs designed by Jillian Michaels of The Biggest Loser and other pro trainers. Other features include heart rate monitoring via handgrip contacts sensors and a wireless chest strap, an mp3 plug-in port and integrated speakers, a cooling fan, and a 400-lb user weight capacity.

Our Thoughts

Reliable and low maintenance, the FreeMotion Freestrider s7.8 is the light commercial model that sells for $4,395. You can opt to add a TV monitor for an additional $500. We think you should save a ton of money and go with the affordable FreeStrider s5.6 elliptical, which offers a 35-inch stride length, for just $1,299. The s5.6 — a huge hit with reviewers as well as an award winner many times over — features much of the same technology of the FreeMotion Freestrider s7.8 elliptical and is ideally suited for home use.
